Mathematical Monday 10-18-10

Today I just want to mention some quick fun mathematical things about the human body that are useful for measuring stuff without a tape measure.

– the length of your outstretched arms fingertip to fingertip is close to equal to your height
– a cubit (the unit of length Noah’s ark was measured in) is the length your elbow to your fingertip, well, in that case, I guess it was Noah’s arm
– a span is the outstretched distance from your thumb to your pinky, mine is 9 inches
– Need to measure something small quickly? The top segment of your thumb is about an inch, the width of your pinky finger is about a centimeter, and the width of your palm is about 4 inches

Isn’t that fun to know?

There is the kid technique, but it isn’t much of a schedule, it is just go as hard as you can till you pass out and then do it all over again to your parents dismay.

My span is 9 inches too! I’ve always used the length of my whole hand to measure things. It’s 8 inches exactly from top of my middle finger to the tip of my wrist. My pinky fingerNAIL is 1 centimeter. I’m totally average size height and weight of a woman but have size 11 shoe and HUGE hands. Drives me crazy but it is good for keeping up with the boys and looking like a pro when measuring things around the house. 😛
