Geeky Etsy Finds 9-23-10

I’m a day late with the Etsy finds, but they are still pretty awesome, so make sure to check them out!

What do you make?
I make bold retro jewelry using nostalgic pieces including tokens from Monopoly and Scrabble tile. My favorite medium because of the endless possibilities, LEGOs.
Who are you and/or how did you get started?
My name is Dave though I am known as Gr0glmann as the shop will show you; I am a computer engineering major that happened to do some tinkering with old toys and ended up with an online jewelry business. Very fitting, right? I made a few items for my girlfriend and friends who did some free adversing for me around school and business took off from there!
What makes your items great for geeks?
With today’s fashion, everybody wants to be unique but representative to who they are as a person. As trends tend to show, people love nostalgia and with the recent influx of retro gaming fashion, it’s hard to go anywhere public and not see someone with a t-shirt with some kind of retro Nintendo pun on it. People are nostalgic and geeky. Now more than ever, people are proud to wear that on their sleeve and show it off, I think that’s why my items appeal to them.
What sorts of geeky stuff are you into?
I, like many others my age, had a SNES growing up so I am in a way apart of the ‘Mario Generation’. I was pretty big into gaming growing up including collecting Pokemon cards and playing Magic: the Gathering in school with my friends. I still keep a Wii around for when I get that Mario playing itch.

What do you make?

I make unique & fun fabric wearables for babies, kids & adults. Whimsical hats, cute costumes and easy DIY patterns.

Who are you and/or how did you get started?

I’m a mom of 3 that began sewing for my own kids because I couldn’t find the unusual things I was imagining for them. My baby daughter’s bald head gave me the idea for my original Hairdo Hat and after people began asking if I would sell them, I opened The Green Hedgehog on Etsy. The response has been so positive I’ve been coming up with more geeky designs ever since.

What makes your items great for geeks?

My creations are all about being out-of-the ordinary & expressing the fun side of life and that’s what being a geek is all about. People can’t help but smile when they see my items. Some things are sci-fi geek like my Leia Hairdo Hat, some are classic geek like my Baby Viking and some are just laugh-out-loud silly geek like my Pineapple Hat. Why not make every day a fun one? Boring is bad!

What sorts of geeky stuff are you into?

I live in a very geeky household (with a software developer husband, two geek-in-training boys + baby), so I’m into lots of weird & wonderful things. Macs, Star Wars, old school Willy Wonka, Barbapappa, space, gnomes, repurposing/hacking stuff and anything that feeds my crafting addiction.
