Geeky Woman Role Model: Autumn

One of the things I love about the geek community on twitter is that when I am doing an incredibly geeky, almost embarrassing, thing, everyone jumps in and goes, “I do that too!”. Well, for a while one person was consistently replying to everything I was doing, right down to a brief conversation about our childhood love affairs with Jonathan Brandis on SeaQuest. I think that’s when I told her husband I had a crush on his wife. Well, what can I possibly say to a woman who loves BSG, SeaQuest, and LoTR? I’ve got an idea: Hey Autumn, you’re our Geeky Woman Role Model for the month of August!

Read on after the jump to find out why Autumn is so amazing!

You might already be familiar with Autumn either on twitter as AutumnBuck or from her varied articles on the great geeky site Geek Six. However, I got some insider information from Autumn’s board game lovin’ (and post-writing over at GFBRobot) husband GeekInsight. I gotta say, if it was his intent to get me over my geek-girl-crush on his wife, it was a spectacular failure!

Autumn is a definite Sci Fi geek who loves Star Wars, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, and Terminator. She once had the awesome geeky job of helping to auction BSG props because she could put the information cards together from memory without having to look up each piece. She recently named her new kittens Caprica and Athena. She has decorated her home with Starbuck’s Mandala (photo above) and most recently she painted a recognizable moment from Star Wars, take a look!

Speaking of BSG, Autumn also designed this awesome T-shirt about flying toasters. I totally used that screen saver too!

Autumn isn’t just into science fiction, she’s also got a special place in her heart for Lord of the Rings and Legend of the Seeker. I’ve heard her paintings of Gandolf, Bilbo, and other characters adorn her home. I’m starting to think I should plan a visit! Her wedding cake was topped with Richard and Kahlan from LOTS.

Autumn’s posts are on many subjects, but she always keeps the geek girls in the loop, check out her favorite Space Women. She also loves to hum TV show theme music. She can’t decide between wanting to be or wanting to be with the Dread Pirate Roberts. That’s my kind of role model!

In conclusion, I can’t help but mention that Autumn is a sailor who spent six months on a replica old time sailing ship, and she’s a folk musician who plays hammered dulcimer and didgeridoo (swoon!). I think I wrote a didgeridoo sonata once, maybe we could get together, hang out, you know. Okay, I’m going to stop dreaming now.

So, Autumn is an artist, a scifi/fantasy fan, and pretty much just generally awesome. That’s why we are proud to call her a Geeky Woman Role Model!

I knew she was all kinds of geeky awesome, but I did not fully understand. Six months on a sailing ship?! She is a fantastic role model.

Oh, heh, yeah…I wasn’t a very good sailor, but I have great stories that usually revolve around me hurting myself, or proving to ten year olds that pirates can to wear vans. Thanks for the feature, I feel all sheepish! And feel free to hang out any time, I live very close to medieval times, which may or may not have been a deciding factor on the house.
